I Dropped The Drop In DropBox

If you don’t know Box by now, you should! Why? I am a recent convert. Don’t get me wrong, I still dig DropBox for file sharing – it’s fast, easy and they give away gigs of storage space.  But Box … well Box is on a whole different level. Call me a fan boy, go ahead but here is why the platform is quite stellar:

Invite others to view, edit and all that stuff – okay, this is pretty much a commodity feature set but there’s more goodness below.

Version Control – This is quite important when working with several team members on a specific project.  What I love about this is that you can store multiple versions of the same file and even download each version for reference.

Post comments – my favorite feature is the ability to comment on documents. What’s even more awesome is that they have a Slideshare like tool when viewing Powerpoint presentations so it makes leaving comments about certain slides easy. I don’t even have to download the file to view and leave comments on it. Also, I can @tag other team members and ask questions, assign tasks w/due dates and comments.

Real-time activity feed – what’s an app without an activity feed, seriously?

Improving collaboration between teams, partners and markets within the organization is no longer an option in today’s hyper connected business environment. Speed of change, unpredictability and the increasingly social nature of the stakeholder ecosystem make collaboration instrumental to your company’s ability to differentiate from its competitors. New collaboration workflows are slowly spreading across the organization requiring the output of shared value to the entire ecosystem starting within the social domain of your employees. And, as today’s workforce becomes more mobile and adopts new capabilities, companies are now looking for innovative ways to increase productivity and efficiency.  With the rise of cloud storage options like DropBox, Box and several others, efficiency is finally within reach.

I use both and like them for different purposes. Dropbox is for me: current projects always in sync. Box is better for files I’ve completed. It can’t handle the nested folders in Adobe InDesign projects well, so I keep things in Dropbox until I move projects off to print.
