Behind the “enterprise” curtain of social media

This is late news, sorry.  But I, along with Tac Anderson and LaSandra Brill participated in a podcast last month facilitated by 1to1 Media (a division of Peppers & Rogers Group).  Here is quick excerpt of the podcast (listen to part 1 and part 2), but you will have to listen to the entire thing if you want all the juicy details (it’s almost an hour in length):
What do you find are the biggest challenges when it comes to implementing social media?
Tac Anderson: I think a lot of times there is a lot of excitement and people want to make sure they’re not left behind. But because social media touches so many different business groups within a company, everyone wants to add their piece to it. So the biggest challenge I’ve seen is making sure that the goals are properly aligned with what the medium is for.

Gearing up for BlogWorld, again

This is my second stint at BlogWorld and I am very excited to be sitting on two panels to share my experience working with social media in a fortune 100 company. Last year, I was just a participant and found many of the sessions I attended to be extremely valuable, specifically the closing keynote by Mark Cubin.
The first panel, titled How to Implement Blogs & Social Media Strategies for Big Business is on Friday, September 19th from 3:30 PM to 4:45 PM, moderated by none other than Michael Rubin who works for the Blog Council. Others on the panel will be John Andrews of Walmart and Hillary Weber of Kaiser Permanente. This session particularly interests me because implementing social media in any way is definitely a challenge in corporate America; and I am pleased to be sharing my experiences with everyone.
The second panel, titled, Beyond Blogging: Stories & Social Media [...]

Facebook: Interruption marketing that engages a guy like me

A few days ago, I saw this Facebook video banner ad with the new Ben Stiller & Robert Downer Jr. flick, Tropical Thunder.
I am a huge movie buff and have been waiting for this movie to come out in the theatres, so it caught my attention pretty quickly.  What was interesting was the comment field right underneath.  So I thought to myself … wow, this is pretty cool; an embedded multimedia advertisement with comments visible to users’ network of friends.
I left a comment or two (as you can see) but I didn’t notice it in my feed.  Nonetheless, I did see a comment from a friend of mine Daniel Riveong who said, “Dear Facebook: Commenting on ads is a sure way to get trolls. Have you seen YouTube comments?”  He is exactly right.  I wonder if advertisers are going to monitor these comments and pull ads if any “questionable” comments [...]

I did not fall of the face of the earth, quite yet!

Whoa, it sure has been a busy two months. I have been swamped with other stuff that I have neglected to write in this blog.  First, I was asked by Michael Rubin of the Blog Council to write a post for their blog that just launched. My post titled, Thinking Strategically about Corporate Blogging outlines several things marketers must consider before launching a corporate blog strategy.
I also wrote a post in my other blog about making the business case for using Twitter; and cite great examples of how companies (like @Richardatdell) use twitter to build relationships, listen, and participate in meaningful conversations.  I also cite the not so good examples from HP and Yahoo; both of which are my former employers.
I was asked by Chris Heuer to be a part of the Interim Board of Directors for the Social Media Club. I humbly accepted and I am currently the lead [...]
