The Challenge of Social Media Marketing and Optimization

Oct 19, 2006 Michael Brito

The concept of Social Media is now a part of our daily lives. Just the other day, I was in a hotel room watching Good Morning America (something I haven’t done in years)and they featured the Youtube Video of the Week.  I immediately went to Youtube to search for the video and noticed it was viewed over 540, 000 times!!!!  I saw the same thing on Fox News yesterday.  The point of this is that Social Media is almost mainstream and it’s no wonder why big brands like Dove are all over it.  The challenge for companies who want to play ball in this space is that they cannot control their marketing message.  Well, I got news for the big brands. That’s what Social Media is all about!  Chances are there is already a conversation going on online about their products or services, or even the business itself.  And, the question they need to ask themselves is “Are we going to participate, or let someone else?”

This is true. I was recently on Youtube and somehow stumbled on a bunch of videos from the Nohogirls and Wehogirls rivalry....one being from North Hollywood and the other from West Hollywood...

It's pretty hilarious what's being posted on Youtube....

But dies it mean, that all marketing power in the hands of youtube and like it sites? Yesturday, marketing power was in the hands of marketers - they've been deciding what we will buy or perfor, and now youtube do?
Ok, not youtube but people, who post videos to youtube? Anyway, youtube has got all power of marketing posibilities. It has got the people attention, thousand people's attention.

How do you think? Wether tommorow marketing will be only through youtube and digg ?

Triple H - Not sure I am following you here.

My point in the initial post is that social media is yet another channel that marketers must take into considertion as they plan their marketing strategies.

You are right, Youtube is growing and becoming mainstream; and marketers need to understand how to play ball in sites like this.

What is considered social marketing? Anything that spreads by word of mouth and virally like YouTube? Would Cash Columns be an example of this?

Nice one Brian. Please do not spam my comments again. I am sure you are well aware of social marketing and "cash columns" and "quality traffic supply" are not examples of this.
